If you suspect a MAF sensor problem, scan for any fault codes. A MAF problem should (but does not always) set a fault code.

A hot-film MAF sensor targets 1degrees F higher than the incoming air temperature while a hot-wire MAF sensor is heated to an additional 2degrees F above the surrounding air. Air from the engine’s intake system passes the sensing element, cooling it so that more electrical current is required to maintain the target temperature.
The hot film MAF sensor works somewhat similar to the hot wire MAF sensor, but instead it usually outputs a frequency signal. This sensor uses a hot film-grid instead of a hot wire.

MAF issue on a VW has been to just clean it. Of course, you have to keep in mind that a dirty VW MAF sensor will not cause a lot of havoc.
