MAF) sensor measures the volume of air entering the engine so the Engine Control Unit (ECU) can calculate how much gasoline the fuel injectors should deliver to each cylinder in order to create the proper fuel-air ratio. Sometimes, however, a malfunction in this little instrument can lead to big problems, usually resulting in very poor engine performance.P0P0P16Open Vectra 16vhello.The mass airflow sensor (MAF) measures the amount of air entering the engine. The OBD-II code P01is set when the signal from the mass air flow sensor is out of expected range, or in other words, the MAF sensor doesn't work properly. The VAF (volume air flow) sensor measures the air flow into the engine with a spring-loaded air vane (flap/door) attached to a variable resistor (potentiometer).
The vane moves in proportion to the airflow.
CHANGING THE AIR FLOW METER ON A VAUXHALL
An air flow meter is used in some automobiles to measure the quantity of air going into the internal combustion engine. All modern electronically controlled diesel engines use air flow meter,[citation needed] as it is the only possible means of determining the air intake for them.
The main purpose of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor is to measure the volume and density of air entering the engine at any given time. The computer uses this information in conjunction with input from other sensors, to calculate the correct amount of fuel to deliver to the engine. A malfunctioning MAF sensor can cause a wild up/down engine idle speed (say, 0-0rpm). This might be caused by a loose harness connection or by a damaged or contaminated sensing wire.
