The Consumer Reports 20Car Brand Report Cards ranks automakers across the world by reliability, road test performance and other factors. For the second year in a row, Lexus topped the list, nearly matched by Mazda, and followed by Toyota and Audi. While the Japanese automakers continue to make improvements, we’re seeing other brands, most notably Korean makes, really accelerating the rate of improvement. Leading companies are not only stepping up the pace of improvements on existing models, but are also working up front to launch vehicles with higher quality and more intuitive designs.We then average those scores at the brand level.
This average overall score is used to rank the car brands as an indicator of who makes the best cars. It then ranks automakers to see which brands do the best and which do the worst. Some brands do exceptionally well in road tests but fall flat on reliability, but often, reliable cars perform poorly in road tests.

The survey ranks brands based on the number of problems owners report in their first days of vehicle ownership. What is considered to be a problem varies from owner to owner, and the rankings don’t break down a difference between mechanical problems and problems with features like Bluetooth, so they do need to be taken with a grain of salt. The majority of the top makes for overall quality are also among the top in J.D. Power’s ranking as well.

First-ranked Toyota sold around 1million motor vehicles, down from 1million vehicles in 2014. When considering light passenger vehicles, Volkswagen's tally stood at million vehicles in 2while Toyota's light passenger vehicle sales amount to million units in that year.
