Air mass flow sensor fault zone

MAF) sensor measures the volume of air entering the engine so the Engine Control Unit (ECU) can calculate how much gasoline the fuel injectors should deliver to each cylinder in order to create the proper fuel-air ratio. Sometimes, however, a malfunction in this little instrument can lead to big problems, usually resulting in very poor engine performance.

The mass airflow sensor is a round tunnel made of plastic with a sensor attached inside. All cars take air from the outside and pass it into the engine through the air filter.

If you suspect a MAF sensor problem, scan for any fault codes. A MAF problem should (but does not always) set a fault code.

A mass air flow sensor, or MAF, is a tool found in modern engines used to monitor the incoming air. This information is essential for the engine control unit (ECU) to deliver a balanced amount of fuel mass to the engine.

Pelican Technical Article: Troubleshooting Vacuum Leaks). The MAF is located on the left side of the engine compartment, just behind the air filter (see Project for access to the engine compartment).

The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is located inside the engine compartment and is used to measure the amount and temperature of air that is entering the engine at any one time. Older style meters used on fuel injection systems in the 1980s measured air volumetric flow, which worked fine but then you also needed a separate sensor to figure out how cold or dense the air was.

If the engine is equipped with a mass air flow meter, it often incorporates a temperature sensor that can provide a measurement of pre-compressor intake air temperature. In the temperature range of -to 150°C, silicon IC sensors are commonly used while for temperatures up to 1000°C, thermistor-type sensors are available.

As a rule, the Check Engine light only comes on if a fault affects emissions. A bad sensor can certainly do that.
